There isn't anything obviously nonsensical about it. Scientists have already shown that we can synthesis DNA that can run a cell's machinery. No doubt we can synthesize prions, and before too much longer, viruses. Are viruses alive? At what point is something "alive"?

Or, does the definition come down to "what we cannot synthesize"?
