>Or will the entry-level Irix box be a $17000 Octane?

If SGI told the analysts the NT products would be an 'addition to the current product line', what do you think that means? Is the O2 (part of the current product line) priced at $17000?

>If that happens how will SGI maintain sufficient Irix volumes to
>attract the software developers?

Precisely why, in my opinion, it won't happen. Not to mention the people for which an NT platform isn't up to par (because lack of SGI specific libraries, sophisticated digital media and Performer etc. API they know and love, amongst others, or the lack of integration of the different hardware specifics into coherent sets of libraries), or for which the Intel processor line is not a good fit (because of its current rather limited FP performance as compared to MIPS processors).

As for the rest of your post, what you're advocating is simply that SGI make the two lines converge in the future, using as many common components as possible, and that's about it, no? I doubt that idea hasn't occurred to SGI people, though I'm not in the secret of the gods.

Edward -

As a SGI and Cray user, I would love to be able to afford a SGI workstation for home. I'm sure the SGI NT machine will be excellent but I don't want NT, I want Irix. Will SGI provide Irix boxes at the same price as the NT boxes? Or will the entry-level Irix box be a $17000 Octane? If that happens how will SGI maintain sufficient Irix volumes to attract the software developers?

I've had an SGI at home for years. Didn't cost me an arm and a leg, either. Hunt for a used one. BTW : Entry for an O2 is very low, and an Octane doesn't cost $17k anymore, either.
