Maybe technologically. But as a business of communications, Deutsche Post and the Royal Mail have a history going back about 500 years. Postal industry subsidized and incubated most of the transportation systems in US (and maybe in other countries too).

The Royal Mail service was first made available to the public by Charles I on 31 July 1635, with postage being paid by the recipient, and the General Post Office (GPO) was officially established by Charles II in 1660.[12]

Of course, less modern mail systems go back 3000 years...
