Re: the relief well will not have a problem intercepting the well and pumping in mud.

Is there much of a chance that the well will blow the heavy mud out the top faster than it can by pumped in?

...such that the weight of the column of mud, oil, and (apparently) gas is too light to counterbalance the pressure from the reservoir?

Could the second well be needed to get a sufficient rate of flow of mud into the bore?

You are impressing me, yes:)i will endorse this, yes<<As soon as they get mud pumped from the relief well to pour out of the damaged BOP, we will all have a much better idea what sort of damage BP's shoddy well design has incurred. That will determine the well kill procedures to be used.>>

Worth a mention-- i gave a quick scan written by a geologiost and trained in flow mechanics that was writing on OilDrum.
i got the impression that the flow rate on this well is extraordinary(captured and uncaptured amount), he gave some hypothetical as a major major flow rate as being a 30k barrels a day via pipe that size.
He then went into Rock Pressure versus Oil Reservoir pressure differentials, the greater the differential the stronger the PUSH upwards of the Crude Oil and used this to suggest why the flow is so extreme.
That only left me noting idly "Will that be a hindrance to the mud filling?" We will see. Max
p.s. We know already the BOP pipe had the mud going out virtually as fast as they put it in.They went in saying they were 80% confident, the 20% doubt proved the reality to the extent they gave it up as a lost cause.
