Mao engineered a cultural revolution. He enlisted Chinese equivalent of a pitch fork brigade made up of ordinary people and peasants. They turned against the traditional establishment (incumbents). They were anti-intellectual. Ignorance and stupidity became fashionable. It was a terrible time for most Chinese.

I guess there were lessons there that we could learn from.
