Support and safety net programs are not "stimulus."

Extending or Expanding Unemployment Benefits

Cost Effectiveness = Large
Length of Lag from Enactment to Stimulus = Short
Uncertainty About Policy's Effects = Small

These benefits are regularly extended in recessions, and most of any additional benefits are likely to be spent quickly.

>And if you think I'm arguing against a straw man, consider this. Nancy Pelosi herself said that unemployment checks are "stimulus." How utterly stupid is that?

It's pretty smart, actually. It maintains some level of spending among the unemployed until they either get a job or there's an increase in the tax base to cover it.

Something close to 100% of unemployment benefits goes right back into the economy.
