" He now is afraid to leave his home without his passport "

He should have no problem to carry a SS card or driver license,
no need for a passport.

Have a good lawyer in hand and he can be rich in no time should
the law enforcement screw up big time.

AWESOME.

" the legal Hispanic community "

Help the country, help yourself. I'm sure there are ways to
make the issue less problematic.

Don't be exploited by the ILLEGAL. They can target all the
ASIAN if they want. LEGAL is LEGAL. ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL,
regardless of race, color, origin. There are probably ILLEGAL
whites. A couple of question and answer should tell.

AWESOME.

"I damn sure never want to live in an America that has such arbitrary rules, exercisable at the whim of some racist cop, to demand on site proof from me of my right to be here."

This is a recurring theme in history. The economy goes south, and the finger is pointed at the most recently immigrating ethnicity. The Irish, the Italians, the Chinese have ALL been subjected to much worse than what's happening in Arizona.

This too shall pass..

I have a brother-in-law, American born and raised, military veteran, 25 year aerospace engineer.

Happens to of the Hispanic persuasion, and of late a defector from the GOP.

He now is afraid to leave his home without his passport.

What BS. I'm quite sure that with a valid US drivers license and the ability to speak flawless American English without an accent, no cop is going to hassle him in any way.

The majority of Americans are fed up with our disfunctional immigration and border policies and the next election is going to reflect that sentiment. Count on it..

Metacomet, since your brother in law was born here I am quite sure his english is excellent so a brief conversation with law enforcement should remove any doubts. In addition , he should carry a military ID - law enforcement respects servicemen. Finally, if he served in the military during a war - Iraqi Freedom, Desert Storm, Viet Nam etc. - tell him to get Veteran license plates - law enforcement is very likely to cut him a break. My cousin's husband was stopped for speeding by a state trooper and he noticed his VFW hat ( he served in Nam) . The trooper asked him about the hat and he told the trooper he served in Nam . The trooper replied " I go easy on veterans " and let him off with a verbal warning.

>>He now is afraid to leave his home without his passport.<<

Sorry, read the law. It only comes into play in the course of a lawful stop. If the "racist cops" wanted to hassle him, they damn sure didn't need this law to do it. Anywhere in the US, I might add.

What percent of the police force in Tucson is hispaic? 30%? 50%? That would be similar to Phoenix. Are you assuming the cops of Hispanic descent will violate his civil rights? Or that higher level officers in the force would tolerate it? That's a knee-jerk left wing reaction to giving the police any discretion at all to do their jobs. We trust them to put their lives on the line every day. We can trust them with this.

I think your bro-in-law should exercise his right to use common sense. He brings his AZ license with him when he drives, no? I do that, it's the law for everyone anyway. Sounds like he's been cowed by left wing propaganda on the bill. Hell, the Feds aren't even suing on a civil rights basis, they're suing on preemption (and they will lose).
