You see, Princess--all we have is questions and wonder. The immensity of time and space and speed leaves us struck dumb. The simplicity of on and off in computers as they and we read the universe and create our own infinite complexity--awesome. All the polarities: on/off, up/down, forward, back, joyful/sad, tall/short, fast slow. I find that unfathomable. Doubtless, it means nothing to you. When we know almost nothing about the nature of things…could there be gods? Well--why not? But that is an entirely different proposition than the question: Is the bible tribal myth like all the thousands of tribal myths or is it pointing to something Supremely benevolent, omnipotent, and so forth? To the latter question we can answer immediately after reading the myths and looking into history: Sheer tribal nonsense and myth. There are instances recorded in the myth stories and the fictions that (if historical) would have left thousands and thousands of pages of commentary contemporaneous with the events. The writers and historians were there and would have witnessed it all. If such a man as Jesus had existed as fictionalized in the New Testament stories I should not have made his acquaintance. While not the most terrible person to have (never) lived--yet he was far too hateful and negative and bizarre to feel safe around. I would not have felt comfortable having anybody near me who thought diseases were caused by demons or who was so immature that he would curse a dead fig tree for being a dead fig tree or promise death and destruction both on the earth and in some mythical place (where people whose bodies have decayed and returned to dust) yet burn--and somehow manage to gnash their teeth, too!. Hmmm… Can anybody believe that Cain built a city in two generations? That God actually asked Adam to name all the animals and try to find a suitable mate? (Well God could never do anything right, could he?) That Jonah lived in the digestive juices of a fish and was spit up on land with nothing but a little indigestion?? That the people were building a tower to find God in heaven and were getting uncomfortably close? EVERY TRIBE HAS THESE STORIES. Every Native Tribe in Canada had these goofy tales. Every tribe and nation since humans developed language beyond grunting and pointing have had these stories (and they have all been "The People", as well). Only a very infantile mind could fail to understand the historical causes and circumstances attendant to these stories. They are the result of ignorant pre-scientific people asking normal questions about things that were incomprehensible to them. Who is so strong and powerful as to make fire come from the sky? Why did the Spirit come (the tornado) and kill 55 hands of our people (550)? What have we done wrong? And what must we do to appease him (obviously a HIM. No mere woman could be so strong and fierce). We will sacrifice something very dear to us and send it up in smoke. He will find the smell and the gesture pleasing and He will stop this terrible flood (or tsunami). Wherever He is it will reach Him. It must go somewhere. It disappears, does it not? Certainly, it will reach heaven and He will be pleased with the aroma which costs us so dearly. We invented the nonsensical definition of a God that had just the qualities we wanted Him to have: Not lacking in any powers of any kind--and of course a nice guy at heart and truly concerned about people in a special way. There is nothing in that definition that references any single fragment of reality and yet is has unfortunately been the prima facie premise of philosophers for centuries and it has held the human race barely out of the starting gates compared to where we could have carried the race. You know, life has been on the earth for at least HALF A BILLION YEARS. And dinosaurs lived for about 180 MILLION years before going extinct. Humans (to put this in perspective) arose about 200,000 years ago. So dinosaurs had already been extinct for 65 MILLION years before we even existed! Now how in the Hell to you manage to worm crap like talking snakes and donkeys and walking around in a mythical Eden naming all the animals into your cerebral cortex?? You’ve got to disbelieve one or the other? You don’t think they can both be true do you? They have nothing whatsoever in common. Use your head.
