It is only a conundrum when framed in the current light. Why not privatize the process of legalizing entry into this country ? We certainly have an abundance of lawyers to improve the velocity of legalization.

The politics of this issue remind me of the Palestinian issue which is used to deflect attention.

Only because those are the only ones available to them.

andthe most willing to take on taks that no one else will take.

Legalize them and they'll quickly learn to take advantage of the ample benefits of the welfare state.

I'm not really talking about illegals. Currently they don't count politically since they don't vote.

our nanny/maid immigrated illegally from El Salvador 23 years ago. When she got here she made an effort to learn english, paid taxes, got her green card and eventually got her citizenship. Her two sons have anglo names and english is their first language. Smoothsails' maid did the same thing. Both of them are relatively conservative. They get to see the freeloading immigrants even more closely than we do and it offends them.

And why shouldn't it? Anybody who works hard for their money isn't going to want it taken away through taxes and given to someone who isn't willing to work as hard as they do.

And if you think about it, what has produced the most evident progressives? Industries that have disproportionate payscales.

Lots of progressives in the entertainment industry. Two things driving that. Let's be serious, if an actor or actess makes $5M for acting in a movie or TV show, the bulk of that money is unearned. And they know it. And since they know it is basically unearned, they feel guilty about it and want to give some of it away. And then they think "gee, everyone should give some of their money away to help others because helping others is really good".

and then there are the non-working hollywood types. They support the progressive movement because they are in desperate need of redistribution of wealth just to survive. Because their dream is to make movies even if nobody is willing to pay them.

Another place you will see a bunch of progressives is silicon valley. A lot of people made a lot of money. And from first hand experience I can say that the compensation levels were absurd in the 90s. Lots of unearned money out there....

People who have to work hard for their wages don't want to give it away just to be spent frivolously on someone who isn't willing to work as hard as they do. And that isn't limited to natural born US citizens.
