Oh... I donno about THAT!

(I, for one, always 'noticed' the size of that F.I.C.A. line on pay stubs. :-)

The point you make ('invisibility', hiding the tax bite from the citizenry) is ALL THE MORE TRUE I'd say for V.A.T. style taxes.

Politicians always seem to love 'em because the multi-layered nature of VAT means that most of the increase is obscured from the end payer.

That could be the reason that Steve Formes has always been pushing VAT as a replacement for income taxes... that and such 'consumption taxes' would disproportionately be assessed on Middle and Poor Classes... whereas graduated income taxes (by definition) are disproportionately assessed on the wealthy. :-)
