There is a line of scientific thinking/research that too much avoidance of natural viruses and nature can lead to over sensitivity. Somewhat like the over application of antibiotics leads to super viruses. Like almost everything in life - balance or moderation is better than total lack of cleanliness or a completely sterile environment in this case.

it's not that I think it can't happen again, it is that I don't believe that creating a hysteria about it is an effective deterrent. Do you remember when there was the big Mad Cow scare right before 9/11? Once 9/11 happened there was obviously a bigger news story out there and suddenly nobody gave a damn about mad cow.

the flu sucks and it does kill people. It has the potential of becoming a pandemic. We should always be aware of that. But we shouldn't be living our life in fear of a pandemic anymore than we should live in fear of a meteor wiping out our civilization.
