>Given that the construction industry is down......what industry in Phoenix will pick up the slack in terms of jobs?<<

The main jobs people have retrained into are medical/biomedical and alternative engineering. A certain number of folks in the trades recylcle into stuff like HVAC servicing/repair (since AC is always in demand here). And people are always downscaling it into retail, but that's got limited play (if population isn't increasing, either will retail and we're already one of the most 'over-retailed' places on earth).

I thought there was some tech in Phoenix too...MOT, ASYS etc. I was surprised to see that construction made up 30% of AZ employment at its peak.
