Well maybe I got bad ones but indoors the experience has not been good with CFLs.. The gas/vapour coming out was a real issue for me.. Outdoors as spots they aren't that bad even in the cold.. (Toronto), not as bright on startup but still do the job OK so I'll continue to use them there.. I'll look for better spirals for indoors but frankly the disposal issue is also a problem .. Maybe if you could drop them off at the bank or beer store with a deposit refund ... but politicians do not think outside the box... they'll find some complicated way as they have already tried up here to hide some tax on them which will be frittered away in the usual unproductive government fashion.. :o(

My neighbour got his (LED outdoor spots) from China on eBay... swears by them ... He has the opposite experience as you with eBay... totally good.. I've never used it so am agnostic... I can see his yard is well lit up.. and has had no issues with them..

Also interesting about the dimmers.. I had issues with that as the CFLs ceased to function after being used in a dimmer circuit.. (we use lots of dimmers)

Completely agree on Whitman. Too bad a better candidate didn't make the finals; what a (lack of) choice for CA gov. Govt continues to get the failures or the inexperienced.
