Some Democrats are racists as well, perhaps a larger number than the number of Republicans. All of which has little to do with the political football issue. Pointing out the relatively rare cases of serious open (or poorly hidden and impactful and relevant to the current political debates) racism, isn't using race as political football. Accusations of racism you know are false, or made with reckless disregard for truth (which mainly come from those on the left), should be considered out of bounds. Their a problem for multiple reasons. They are unfair and unjustified, they can serve to shut down or distract from debate on real issues, they can make the racial climate more heated and thus perhaps actually increase racism to a minor degree, and they can serve to give cover to real racists, since any charge spread so widely and so often falsely looses some of its sting over time.

The (R)'s adopted the racists fleeing from the (D)'s in the Kennedy/Johnson era, and have unashamedly provided a home and supporting policies for them ever since. The entire south, once called the "Solid South" by the (D)'s who pandered to the racists there, now belongs to the (R)'s, who pander to the racists there. Just look at current party identification among minorities. They KNOW which is the party that hates them, and which is the party that champions them. The (R) explanation? They're stupid, manipulated dupes! That'll win them a lot of converts!
