"Would it not be a more respectful thing in times like this for a small civil ceremony and all that money contributed go a good cause. "

Don't be silly. Was I supposed to give away the money I spent taking my entire family to Maui cuz we have homeless in my county?
It ain't a wedding I would want, but people need to lighten up.

Isn't this already doing enuf?

Besides, when you start inviting people like the pres, you can't be small and civic. It's what happens when your parents are doing the invites. Otherwise, it would be like "Let's get our 4 closest friends and split for Reno." If Chelsea had gone to Cal, maybe she would have that consciousness, but...she's from Stanfurd.

But isn't the Clinton wedding sort of like a mini-stimulus project? They are spending their money which is creating jobs for people that need to make money to pay the rent and buy clothes etc. Seems like it generates economic activity. If I were an economist, i might start talking about multiplier effects and fancy ideas like that.

It would be NICE if the rich felt that way- but they don't, which is why we should have nice fat taxes. Then they can have their weddings, and we can have 35 % of their cash to help the poor.

Isn't that nice?

But we do have to do something about the stupid things our government does- like Iraq, and Afghanistan....

I do not favor just giving cash to the poor. I want to see job retraining, and life skills classes for the folks who are so low functioning they don't know how to act appropriately on the job. I would like to see some serious movement towards teaching kids trades in high school, if they are not interested in college. I would like to see us give kids really good skills in machining, carpentry, masonry, and other great trades. Now that would be a fantastic use of our tax dollars.
