Re - "Why couldn't Intel sudden announce "Good news!" just before the puts exercise date occurs to drive up the stock price so that perhaps the puts would expire worthless."

Thats the average strike price. They don't all expire at once and the strike prices probably range from $75 to $105. Plus, Intel received money when they sold these puts, so they won't start losing money big time on them until the stock price gets down to $65.
