This means that the population growth has been able to match production (farm land). Sometimes this went wrong, including: * Collapse of farming because of ecology in certain parts of Sweden leading to massive emigration. * Laws that subdivided each field equally with children in an area in Germany, leading to very small fields that were impossible to use. * Changes in landscape. For instance, the southern part of Denmark is sinking while the north part is rising, because of plate tectonics. Several islands have disappeared in the south, while islands in the north have become connected. etc. Once the cities liberalized the construction of new buildings, and started to build outside the city wall, populations exploded. Fortunately, food production has increased and population growth has stopped. Many countries have mechanisms that reduce fertility with poor people - I think all north/west European countries have that. There is also no doubt, that access to abortion has a positive impact on society. I wonder what USA will do. East Europe doesn't have a tight grip on population control like this, and in south Europe you don't need much shelter to survive the winter. Saudi Arabia has a very, very high dependency on trade as a way to provide food, so I am not surprised that the dominant religion in that region defends trade a lot, and that the local culture also focuses a lot on property before having kids. Russia is orthodox, but because of communism which removed a lot of religion, I guess that they may head in a direction that is similar to north/west Europe. I wouldn't be surprised if China goes the same direction, too, but India and Brazil? Eventually USA?
