New mosque approved for Copenhagen

Friday, 16 April 2010 14:37

Vibevej Street will feature a mosque complete with minarets following city council approval

Copenhagen City Council has approved the planning permission for the city’s first mosque, which will feature traditional minarets.

The council approved the Shia Muslim mosque which will be built in the city’s North West district on Vibevej Street. According to the local plans, the building will contain a prayer room, amphitheatre, conference room, library and accommodation for visiting imams.

The mosque will also feature two 32m-tall minarets and a blue dome.

It had previously come under fire for alleged funding from the Iranian government. But the project’s architect Bijan Eskandani has previously assured that the funding is coming from private wealthy Iranian donors and not state funds.

The mosque is one of two planned for Copenhagen, the other being a Sunni Muslim mosque on Amager, near the University of Copenhagen.
