If Biden is too gaffe-prone to be VP, what kind of demented maniac would suggest making him Secretary of State?

I agree. It is hard to understand some of the crazy ideas that are broadcast on many of these MSNBC shows.

As for John Heilemann, he was the author of the book "Game Change" -- as far as I know, he is NOT a Republican.

By now, you probably know that Michelle flew back from Spain on the actual day so that she could join the party

Really? I didn't know that. My error. I should know better than to rely on the NY Times to give me the actual events of the day (see below)

-----------------
CHICAGO – The ladies of “The View” may have gotten him on the set, but Oprah got him for the birthday.

Among the very few friends who joined President Obama for a private birthday dinner on Wednesday night was none other than the talk show queen, Oprah Winfrey, who of course was a critical backer during his 2008 campaign.

With his family out of town – Michelle and Sasha in Spain, Malia at summer camp – Mr. Obama flew here to celebrate his 49th in relatively quiet fashion, with a three-hour meal at one of his hometown’s hot restaurants, graham elliott, owned by Graham Elliott Bowles, a contestant on Top Chef Masters.

On the very exclusive guest list was Ms. Winfrey, joined by Gayle King, her good friend and editor at large at O magazine. Also attending were Mr. Obama’s senior White House adviser, Valerie Jarrett, and close friends Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt. A crowd of bystanders waited for hours outside the restaurant for a glimpse of the president until he exited with a smile and a wave before heading back to his house in the Kenwood-Hyde Park area.

As it happened, even as Ms. Winfrey was celebrating with this president, she was on Chicago television in a taped show interviewing Laura Bush, wife of the last president.
