Steve:
My first production job was at an outdoor sawmill in Michigan in 1936.I helped implement the JIT assembly operation for apple crates( we built them just in time for the apple harvest). We had a hammer, two types of nails and and endless quantity of precut small boards.
Production was 90 per day avg, about 115 max. When winter came, I decided to study engineering.
Now at the Dell tour, production of the facility we inspected
was 8000 /day( 1 of 4 factories) on two shifts. Which would be around
570 per hr.
The production value at $2500 each, would be $20 mil/ day.
If Dell ever decides to build a low cost computer( which they
won't do soon, if ever) CPQ and other low cost manufacturers will thereafter end up with negative profit margins, and would be best
to follow M.D's suggestion as to what to do with those divisions.
