I'm not very acquainted with Seattle's taxi system, but the statement in the post I replied to is almost certainly false.

I doubt very much Seattle actually had an unregulated taxi system. Also I don't have any reason to think the rates charged under whatever type of system they had where ripoff rates other than the unsupported assertion that they where.

And in a certain sense, if it really is an open market rate, with no regulation pushing up prices directly or indirectly (such as by limiting supply, or subsidizing demand, or outlawing competitors), then no rate is a rip off rate.

I bet it was regulated. how many companies can get taxi licenses ? Here in my liberal county only one company could get a cab licensed, the owner big time dem contributor. That company ripped off everyone.
