Thakral said it's in discussions with U.S. and Asian studios to acquire, replicate and distribute DVD titles in China and Hong Kong.

The company has entered two joint ventures with China's Ministry of Culture to set up replication facilities. The plant in Beijing will start operations in April 1998 while the Hong Kong plant will start operations in December this year.

The plants will ship DVD 's to China and Hong Kong.

Thakral said it's undertaking a feasibility study that will last six to nine months on the prospect of setting up a chain of DVD retail stores throughout China. It is also in talks with three potential partners on the project.

Thakral said the China market should be able to absorb 20 million to 30 million DVD titles each year, with the number of DVD players in China expected to hit 10 million by 2000.

The company has invested about US$6 million so far in its DVD business in China.
