FWIW, I won't buy a 56K modem because it is a waste of money.

The 28.8 I already own is just as effective. I don't believe I'm alone in this view.

There is already such traffic tie-ups in the tubing and switching of the backbone, there are prolonged periods, some lasting minutes, when the green RD light (Read-Data) on my trusty Zoom v.34 is idle. Modem is ready and willing, but no data is moving through the pipe. This, rather than speed is the real issue.

My ISP has not upgraded to 56K ports, for the simple reason that I, (and I dial up at least 20 hours a week), will not buy a 56K modem.

People who really need the speed, to run a business, for example, make the leap to some kind of dedicated access like ISDN.
