Agreed-I bought a 56k modem (USRX) two months ago and returned within 24 hours. Hard to believe, but my 14.4 was faster! Now I'm sailing with cable. Could never go back.

In a few months you will be hard pressed to avoid not buying a 56K. ;-)
It seems all new PCs shipping are going to 56K (pick your flavor), with a few of the low end ones dumping their old 28Ks modems. 56K is here, like it or not. I for one kind of like being able to download @40-50K from time to time. The current 56K modems all transition to the lower V.32 (28K) ITU-T standards when local loop wont support it well, and even lower standards as needed.

Andreas,
Its all in how much you value your time! I just upgraded from a
28.8 to a 56Kflex modem. I do not get connected at 56k but I did
move from 26.4 to a solid 40k connection. Can I tell the difference?
You bet. Can I get more done in less time? You bet.

Sean

There is already such traffic tie-ups in the tubing and switching of the backbone, there are prolonged periods, some lasting minutes, when the green RD light (Read-Data) on my trusty Zoom v.34 is idle. Modem is ready and willing, but no data is moving through the pipe. This, rather than speed is the real issue. Andreas, You description sounds as though your ISP needs to invest in a larger backbone. An ISDN would not help further if the ISP's backbone is inadequate. There are some servers that are overloaded at times and data is either slow or halts. However, once my ISP upgraded from two T1s to a T3, my cable access has increased throughput. The effectiveness of 56K to the ISP is a different matter. Glenn

<<FWIW, I won't buy a 56K modem because it is a waste of money.
The 28.8 I already own is just as effective. I don't believe I'm alone in this view.>>

FWIW, I bought a x2 modem and think it is great. I don't see how you can put down a product that you never used. If you want even faster access then by all means go to ISDN or xDSL or whatever is faster. But the occasional user of the Internet may not want to spend $40+ extra dollars per month for faster than x2 speeds. My ISP does support x2. If they did not I would drop them and find one that did!
