Sam,

re: but in what dream world of yours DO winners ACTUALLY compensate losers?"

I would add to your excellent reply the cliche that "a rising tide raises all boats".

Even the "losers" in the USA tend to have access to better education, better healthcare, better nutrition, better housing, better social safety nets than some winners in LDCs. Surely, it is helpful to share some of our resources and wealth with these LDCs through freer and fairer trade as well as other means. Any study I've seen indicates that each party to the agreement receives a net benefit - i.e. a bigger pie shared by all.

When our "poor" have 2 or more colour TVs, a microwave, oven, hot and cold drinking water, ..., most of the world's population would have a very difficult time calling them poor, underprivileged, losers or any other pejorative nametag.

Doing those things that result in a "larger pie" has delivered the desired benefits. I'm at a loss to understand why many implicitly argue for "bigger government", protectionist policies, and welfare delivered in a fashion that detracts from its recipients' ability to improve their lot in life.

All the same, when one objectively looks at progress made in steps of a century, I believe one must conclude that the most altruistic objectives are being best addressed by those countries with the most democracy, freedom of choice and freest trade policies.

Regards,
Ian.
