OT ... Obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption etc tend to reduce life expectancy significantly and thus reduce old age pension costs.
I often wonder which is costlier? Health care or pensions? Never found any stats on it.

Alcohol tax to fund the cop shop?
Why penalize responsible alcohol consumption? Why not simply increase the DUI fines 10-fold or whatever and make them install these breathalyser car start gismos? BTW, no point in throwing offenders into jail just for DUI. Only costs more taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, throw them into jail but charge them to be there. $150 per day sounds about right. <g>

BTW, I live in Canada where alcohol and smokes are already taxed to the hilt. Doesn’t seem to affect consumption according to most stats I have seen.

"If you buy a pack of cigarettes, you should be reported to the Health and Services and be put on a no health care list."

The Tobacco Settlement was another example of industry/government fraud/collusion. Rather than being allowed to buy off states atty generals with cash, the settlement should have MANDATED that ALL Lung diseases are treated in "Smoker Hospitals" that have to meet government standards for quality care paid for by the makers of the products. They could raise the price and pass on the cost to their customers or change the product to make it safe. Free market at work as non smokers would not have to pay for it and smokers could avoid the tax once they quit smoking.

As it is, the stocks make a ton of money for their drug dealer owners and the government looks the other way. Sickening.
