"The recession is declared over because business is expanding. In the aggregate, corporate America (which is actually in great shape as I pointed out to you before) is hiring and expanding. Sales are growing."

I think we are in a depression, or at the least that the recession hasn't ended. I know this is contrary to the official government line, but I think the government is fudging the numbers. (Before I get piled on, this started long before Obama) I believe that the figures from Shadowstats more accurately reflect what is truly happening. While much of the site requires a fairly hefty subscription, there is useful information regarding this in the public areas.

If businesses are hiring and expanding why isn't this reflected in the jobs numbers? If sales are going up why aren't retail sales tax receipts rising? Karl Deninger explains that retail sales figures that most are relying on are same store sales. The problem is that if Circuit City shuts down, and Best Buy closes it non performing stores the same store sales does not reflect over all sales. May be useful for evaluation of the company, but not for the economy.

I agree with your analysis of the off shore situation.

"However, declaring the recession over should help Dems at the polls because that simple statement gives people hope"

Here I disagree. Many simply don't believe it. Those who do will say if this is what a recovery looks like I have been left out. They certainly are not going to be happy. In fact they may feel betrayed.
