MSSE a memory hog? Oh yeah. Same thing here, a 2 gig memory on my laptop with XP SP3. The cursor would not even move for maybe 7 or 8 minutes while MSSE ran amok.

I've been using Avast. Give up on AVG, it was getting too slow.

On another machine I had the Microsoft freebie thingy, but it was horrible. I replaced it with Avira and I'm happy with it.

How Avast compares to Avira for slowing your machine down, I can't say.
