This announcement was interesting:

nytimes.com

"The F.C.C. also approved changes to the E-Rate program, which provides federal money to pay for Internet connections at schools and libraries. The new rules will allow them to set up Internet connections that use the currently dormant fiber-optic lines that are already in place in many communities, giving users more options and theoretically bringing down the cost of Internet service."

"Dormant fiber-optic lines already in place in many communities?" Anyone have a perspective on this wrt HFW?

It's worth noting the comments of two of the FCC commissioners with respect to the ongoing cellco raid on microwave backhaul spectrum (recently proposing tweaking the Part 101 pt-pt microwave rules). Looks like they're going after the WS using the same rationale.

McDowell:

"Finally, as the use of mobile data increases, providers will need to increase their backhaul
capacity, including microwave backhaul, to accommodate the expected exponential increase in
traffic. Increasing the availability of microwave will serve as an additional choice for backhaul
services. This, too, is an issue that I’ve been speaking about for some time now, most recently at
last month’s open meeting. Therefore, I appreciate today’s express commitment to pursue the
question of whether we can accommodate licensed rural backhaul in the white spaces.
Specifically, Commission staff will evaluate this possibility and will formulate and submit a
recommendation to the Commissioners by the end of the year. I will continue to stay engaged on
this issue, and look forward to learning more."

Baker:

"Finally, it is important that we address additional proposals to set aside TV
channels in rural areas for fixed licensed backhaul in the very near future. The ability of
both new and incumbent wireless providers to provide 4G wireless services ubiquitously
is dependent upon a robust wireless infrastructure that is too often lacking in rural areas.
The prospect of fixed licensed backhaul in the TV bands holds great merit and I would
hope that we could move forward along the lines that have been proposed as soon as we
have completed our official analysis of TV spectrum availability."

Looks a bit premature to be claiming victory.

What I look forward to seeing, in due time, is a time sequence chronicling "A Month in the Life of a WhiteFi Device" (and of course, the lives of its neighbors), showing every ping, database look-up, and situational outcome occurring over a thirty-day period. It would make for an interesting interactive app, as well. Juxtaposing an idealized history and a future, empirically-derived one would, IMO, be twice as much fun, and probably even more revealing. If anyone looking in here should happen to already be in possession of such a graph or data base report, perhaps from earlier simulations or modeling exercises, kindly post it here. TIA.
