The GOP even gained a ton of seats in the 2002 midterm elections. Incredible power, everyone had to be patriotic back then..anything they wanted got done. The intention of winning in 2004 at any cost was accomplished as enough Americans in Ohio and Florida felt good enough to pull the lever for GWB one more time..

I would disagree on the madness. When the economy is humming, labor costs are rising, margins shrinking and interest rates are high that is when the stock market crashes again..Survival of the fittest continuing to pick up market share on the cheap in a very low cost of capital environment the ongoing theme..
