Read some of the Amazon reviews. The Katadyn filters last an awfully long time, the ceramic element is designed to be cleaned and reused. It's durable and very light. A great product. One filter is supposedly good for 13,000 gallons (about 1.5 cents/gallon), so unless yer going camping with a herd of camels you'll prolly be OK with it.

This is the one I have:

rei.com

I've drunk some pretty scummy water with it, that came out clear and I've never gotten sick. Expensive, but totally worth it, with the weight saving when you're hiking.

I've used a handful of methods over the years. I spent almost three years in Asia not too long ago. We used this the entire time:

steripen.com

rei.com|13029|SteriPEN||S|e|6174750725&gclid=CNmVro-dxqQCFRKjiQodZkWqEA

It uses UV light to 'sterilize' anything in the H2O. It doesn't kill the microbes. The UV light penetrates the cell walls and damages the chromosomes so they can't divide/reproduce. They pass right through you. 90 seconds to treat one liter. The model we have lasts for something like 5,000 liters. We use re-chargeable batteries so the cost of those goes way down.

I still use a pump/filter when we winter camp in the mountains b/c the batteries don't work in the cold.

T4Y, does it need to be small and portable?

if not, i love the berkey filters. it has a fluoride removal element, too.

once you buy the system, the cost for a family of 4 is about $80-$90 a year.

if you haven't research fluoride, you should.

google "fluoride cancer studies" and "fluoride IQ reduction studies"

this video is excellent, too:

youtube.com

fluoride in the water supply is brought to you by the same people who bring you depleted uranium in munitions - that vaporize when shot and when they explode and it lodges in the lungs of the troops and poisons the environment.

the ADA now recommends that infants not intake fluoridated water...

fluoride is scraped from the smoke stacks of aluminum and fertilizer companies and was simply turned from a cost center to a MASSIVE profit center by dumping this rat poison into the water supply under the guise it helps prevent tooth decay.

no mention it is a sedative, it doubles or more the risk of cancer and it lowers IQ, though. not to mention the poor people who are allergic to it.

what % of water do you drink? 1%? that means 99% of this toxic waste simply is dumped in the water supply for zero proclaimed dental benefits - BUT THE CORPORATIONS GET TO SIPHON OFF TAX DOLLARS BY THE BILLIONS FOR IT.

good deal if you can bribe government to get it.
