I completely agree. jobs like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical are FAIRLY safe because they can't be exported/automated, but the pay will come down. Many people who are currently working in professional jobs have the mental and physical ability to do these positions if they have to. I can actually design and build HVAC systems, right down to selecting tubing sizes, flow rates, and refrigeration fluids, and would do HVAC work if I needed the money. Most professionals I have worked with could wire or plumb a house with a little studying, and they would do it if they had to in order to eat. What I see happening is that as automation continues, the more educated people will displace those who work in what would be considered "safe" industries. The unions won't be able to stop it but there will be violence in the attempt. They will be up against people who are desperate, and smarter than they are. Eventually only the elites will be working in decent paying jobs. The rest will be performing jobs like putting out merchandise, waiting on people, or manning cash registers.

Plumber, electricians, HVAC?? Come on, haven't you noticed we are in a construction recession? There are tons of those guys unemployed. way before they replace plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics and HVAC techs.

When it comes to jobs and standard of living there are larger concepts which I do not hear people talk about. 1) Everyone cannot be a millionaire. Planet does not have enough resources and the pollution would kill us all. Unless it is "millionaire in terms of free time to enjoy life". 2) As automation increases a societies ability to support the population, it can decide to spend less time working and more time enjoying life and gaining wisdom. 3) Working should only be a means to an end, not an end in itself. If possible. 4) We humans need to learn to engage larger concepts. Engage in more abstract thinking. I doubt sentient beings more advanced than we, work much at all.
