Why are we, the most destructive species of all, excepted? Eventually we'll realize we have to do it. China already has. New biological techniques will make it as simple as releasing an engineered virus, then dealing out the "cure" selectively. Think "Children of Men".

True, but as you mention instincts can be overcome with education and female liberation. The three things that correlate with decline in birth rates are women's rights, education and standard of living. Raise those three and birth rates plummet. Most importantly though is that people have to strive for a decent society. If we do not even think in those terms we cannot ever survive. We probably won't survive much longer as it is because two few people, even in educated countries like the US are greedy and lack empathy. The human condition. But many refuse to just give in and join the barbarians. IMO, a persons validity is defined by how they live their life.
