The british had huge debates about free trade in the 19th century. They had 'corn' laws designed to protect british farmers. Some economists argued that it was better for British to buy cheaper corn from more productive farming countries, and use british capital for application on areas where britain was strong, such as manufacturing.

seems like same debate today, except the debate has become meaningless because we have a currency that circumvents all the natural feed-back loops that make the trade rational.

..waiting to get my free house until they sort out the ownership issues...prolly next spring...:)
