Landlords and loud neighbors and very thin walls. Yuck... Primary residence ownership if you don't travel much and really tied down to the stability of community, if you have family and if the payments are comparable to rent is a no brainer.. Problem was the ownership society went on steroids.

Now the flip side if you are in a position to travel and see the world for a year or two might be best to put the stuff in storage and live out of a hotel for roughly $40 a night after all the free nights you rack up including utilities, linens and a free continental breakfast in something like the Choice Hotels chain.. Of course Howard Hughes became real crazy living that way for too long.
