John,
Re -- Can we ask for $350. After all, there are 'emotional distress' involved.

Sure, as long as you buy a $20,000 pentiumII system!! Remember is a $200/system not CPU!!

America paid for its excesses in the late 80's and early 90's. Let's not forget the S&L debacle. The downdraft in Real Estate both commercial and residential that took place, or stocks in the 70's on the heels of the oil crisis. Most of the excess and speculation is out of the US economy at this point relative to those days.

Just the opposite is true in many Asian contries. They are beginning to go through what we went through. It started five years ago in Japan when the Nikki collapsed (Avg. PE on Nikki stocks was 75! at the time and people want to call the S&P overvalued at a pe of 21 now days). Now other Asian markets are starting to implode. The real estate house of cards is in trouble over there and the banks are starting to feel it.

Since our economies are linked to some degree, problems in Asia will effect the US but the brunt will clearly fall on the shoulders of the Asian economies and markets. The US will be a relative "safe haven" and money will flow to the US, at least to the Department of the Treasury.

So, I would listen to your brother but I would just put it into a better historical framework and adjust the conclusion.

Regards,
Brian
