This bug just gives the virus writers something else to use. Programs must be scanned for this code sequence before running just like any other virus infected program. Since an application program can cause this, what comes to mind is how easy it would be to crash a server even over the Internet. What about web hosting services which allow CGI scripting. You can write an EXE which the server runs then halts the server!

It would not hurt to be objective about this issue. What
we know so far is
A) There is a bug in the Pentium Chip.

B) This could cause somebody to intentionally crash a system

C) This is **not** a bug in both Pentium II and Pentium Pro,

D) The effects of this will be short term.

Having said that, lets try to answer the following:

1. Will this bug cause Intel to do a recall, offer a patch (?), etc...
2. will that have any financial implication.
3. Does the short-term down trend offer a buying opportunity
4. Does AMD, Cyrix have a short term advantage.

BTW: I own Intel stock, but would like to hedge my position if
that is an intelligent option.

No I am not upset. I am just an engineer curious to try out things like these. :-)

==>Turning off the power while the system is running will crash it also. Does that upset you ?

well, lets see. You own a network resource, which is locked up in a vault which only you can physically access it. Then you let the users access the resource. Now some guy who is really upset with you (no offense :-) runs this program to crash your resource. Can you see a denial of service attack here?

In the networking world, this is scary. do you remember a recent attack on an ISP which virtually shut their operations?
