It's all a game.. Just like softwood lumber between US/Canada..

put bluntly .. problem US has (This maybe better for the politics of energy thread) is that they cannot bully China.. so this will all be interesting going forward..

On subsidies:

I read somewhere there are more dirt logging roads on publicly owned land in the US than there are miles of public roads. The forest services build these roads and basically looses money on the deal even though they receive money for the lumber contracts. I tend to believe it as I've used these roads to work on other projects. If you satellite googlemap Trinidad CA you can see they clear cut in checkerboard patterns where you can't see the cutting from the main roads, and there is a lot more cutting than anyone ever sees.

Anyway it's interesting this came up since I was about to post on this subject.

Ivanpah caught my attention because it's really not a good place to put a utility plant. After some research I came to the conclusion that the Obama Admin is giving away cheap leases to Utility Corporations as a way to stimulate the economy without the money showing up on the books.

It's secret subsidization basically.

In fact even though they are basically giving away taxpayer assets it shows up as income since they leases.

Earlier in my research I'd contacted Terry Weiner of the Desert Protective Council to see what their viewpoint on the matter is.

I've just received an email with some interesting links. There are a lot more projects in the pipeline than we've heard about.

I post this not as a political discussion. Whether the Admin is doing the right thing or not I will leave to those here.

However

1) politics will certainly become a factor on these projects
2) there seem to be a lot more coming than I was aware of
