They don't have to buy all those shares. For example, they could announce six months later that they have purchased 100K shares and decide not to purchase any more based on the market condition. Many companies have done that. However, the announcement could sweat those shorters.

i was under the impression if they were in buyout talks this would preclude them from repurchasing, unless it was already announced. can anyone confirm this?
