I disagree completely that we have gone downhill for 200 years; I have lived in countries that were so f'ed up they were headed on such a slide and the US is not there yet. We have accomplished a tremendous amount in many ways. But we do have a serious problem know that I have outlined before. Conservatives have failed twice to form lasting governing majorities after extended periods in power. Normally, that would lead a movement interested in governing to find compromises where parts of its agenda would get enacted, even when they are in the minority. Instead they have utterly demonized anyone and anything that isn't orthodox conservative and firmly on their agenda, and done their best to block its creation or advancement. In other words, they can't go forward but they can't go back either, so their only role will be to jam up the works for a long time. That is a big problem.
