Actually, Krugman has everything to lose by accepting this challenge, and that's the beauty of it. He has the reputation of a Nobel laureate and leading champion of Keynesian theory. He can't risk being exposed as a charlatan.

On the other hand, as the pledge total grows, how can he refuse to help provide so much food to the poor?

It's all silliness. Krugman's debates with Harvard's Fergusson who is a conservative are interesting and intellectually compelling. Just throwing bromides back and forth with this guy is a waste of time. It's a childish challenge anyway.
