If the average commission is 6%, then you have a lot of wiggle room. But a lot of people do not know how to do it by themselves, or, they have no time to do it themselves. Same with stock brokers. Many people need a coach. It is true that many of the coaches are worthless. But many are not. My feeling is that the best thing most can do is to get you to stay the course. If you already have that discipline, then you don't need a broker. Also, it is usually not in the broker's best interest for you to stay the course. But the majority of investors buy an asset when it is high and sell it when it is low. We don't think that way because so many on SI are contrarians. But, in the real world, greed and panic rule. If a broker can steady the ship, he's worth his weight in tin. <G>
