Commodity prices are quoted everyday. I have three monitors in front of me, and one has miscellaneous commodity prices on it. And they have been uptrending. Ergo inflation. So that's just a fact.

As for Steve and Sarah Palin's observations, however, I don't have a problem particularly with their statements. I agree with your point of solipsism. However, I've noticed rising grocery prices myself for quite awhile. I shop regularly and see all the prices even things I don't buy. The trend has be pretty clear. So in this particular case, it wouldn't bother me at all to claim "food inflation" even though I almost never will generalize from personal or anecdotal experiences.
