Imo this is of central importance. Darwin compellingly demonstrated that species beget other species by an evolutionary process. He was wise enough to not address a mechanism of evolution. Indeed to this day I contend that the mechanism of the basic evolutionary events, 1) initial generation of a lifeform, and 2) the speciation event whereby a species cleaves from its progenitor, are fundamentally mysterious from the current state of the science.
Filling in these two stories, especially at the molecular level, are imo among the highest mandates of biology today.
