What is killing the U.S. Canada and Europe right now is the cost of entitlements, benefits and pensions that people are expecting. This money in many instances has been managed poorly and at some point the government comes in and makes it your problem with a bail out. The diminishing value of the money promised at some point won't cover the cost of a bus ticket to a soup kitchen.

The people out there that are actually good managers have an option called running away. When enough people run away societal collapse sets in.

"No society can survive the socialist fallacy that there is an absolutely unlimited number of inspired officials and an absolutely unlimited amount of money to pay them." GK Chesterton

El Matador,

While I agree that public order has to be preserved in order to promote economic progress, this lady is losing a year of "freedom" merely because she mocked her fellow Chinese who were engaged in an act of public disorder:

A Chinese woman has been sentenced to a year in a labor camp for retweeting a Twitter post that mocked Chinese protesters who smashed Japanese products during a recent demonstration, her fiance said Thursday.

If we, on this thread, cannot concur that this is extremely harsh punishment, merely for the woman expressing her distaste for other people acting in such a jingoistic manner, then I have to wonder what lurks in each of our souls..

And who will remain to speak for us when we're detained under such dubious charges?

If we cannot agree that the Chinese people deserve better, then we've sold our souls to the Bejing regime.
