I don't know if you were there on 13 Aug '61, but I wish the Tank Company we had there had knocked down the start of the Berlin wall the next day.

Can no longer recall exactly, got to Berlin the first time in late Oct or early Nov 1963.
(I have a great memory, but it doesn't last long.)

"F" Company 40th Armor. The most powerful tank company in the US Army during its day. They were in Turner Barracks, on Huttenweg near and across the street from the PX auto repair center and at the edge of the Gruenewald Forest.

We used to begin our weekly fun run in the woodline behind them on our "5 on Friday" morning outings. That was a 5 mile run through the woods.

Of course with their 35 or so tanks, they were hopelessly outnumbered by the E German and Soviet tank units surrounding Berlin. But they looked good. Durn those tanks looked good. Whenever they left Turner to drive the streets during an incident the Berliners ran into the streets to shower the tanks with fresh flowers.

When they are really scared, everyone likes the US Army .
