IMO, if we had knocked down the start of the Berlin wall when they begin, they would have stopped. Same thing in '48. If Truman had sent a column to Berlin when they closed the border, we would never have needed the airlift.

Either that or it would have started another major but very brief war.

In 48 and 61 and 63 we had a very small army in Europe compared to the Soviets and its satellites and only 3 battalions or 1 brigade equivalent in Berlin.

The Soviet and E German forces surrounding Berlin numbered at least 20 Divisions or 60 brigades. That is about 60:1 odds in favor of them.

Many more divisions awaited our forces based in W Germany at the Fulda Gap and elsewhere.

Those of us on the 6 A Teams in Berlin knew all that, but we thought if it came down to a battle we could save the day. :o)

It never happened in Berlin but I did get to fight and defeat North Vietnamese Russian tanks at the A Team 244 camp at Ben Het Vietnam on the night of March 3-4 1969.

I liked that fight. My wife hates it when I say that.
