REPEAT/Web 3000, Inc. Attacks No. 1 Consumer Internet Complaint - its Slowness; Managers from archrivals Microsoft, Netscape join forces to end the "World Wide Wait" Business Wire - November 11, 1997 20:03 %RPT-WEB NSCP %WASHINGTON %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET V%BW P%BW REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1997--Web 3000, the first Internet-software company formed by former Microsoft and Netscape managers, today announced its entry into the Internet-enhancement software market with breakthrough technology designed to end the No. 1 consumer complaint about the Internet. The new Redmond-based company's focus is developing easy-to-use products that enhance the Internet experience, for newcomers and power users alike, by addressing the most common problems faced by Internet users. Web 3000's first product, a next-generation Internet accelerator, will be unveiled at a debut event in the Seattle area before the end of the year. Web 3000's founders Microsoft Network (MSN) architect Gene Kavner and Vishal Nanda, a former senior product manager for Netscape (Nasdaq: NSCP) have 20 years of software-industry experience between them, including a cumulative 11 years with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). "In a very real sense, the Web has fallen victim to its own explosive growth and rapid adoption, creating the World Wide Wait that everyone surfing the Web has experienced," said Kavner, Web 3000's president and CEO. "The real challenge facing Internet users today isn't deciding where they want to go or how to get there - but how long they have to wait to get there." "Infrastructure improvements including increased bandwidth alone will not alleviate the Internet's congestion problem," said Nanda, the company's director of business development. "Consumers will have to wait a long time for the server-side technology just coming out to make a difference in their Internet experience. "What Internet users require is an intelligent client-side solution that offers the maximum performance possible," Nanda said. "Web 3000's breakthrough technology will supply the immediate solution to the Internet's slowness that every end-user craves." As a primary architect of MSN, Kavner created key infrastructure designed to improve the user's online experience. After seven years, he left Microsoft in 1996 to establish Web 3000. Nanda, a senior product manager for Netscape, was instrumental in the successful launch of Netscape SuiteSpot, which dramatically boosted Netscape server revenue. Web 3000's staff has tripled in the past four months. The rapidly expanding start-up will relocate in January to larger quarters at the new Redmond Town Center to accommodate growth that is expected to double the staff by early next year.
