Corel Hopes To Make A Comeback
Paula Rooney
"1998 is going to be a pivotal year for Corel Corp., which is trying desperately to emerge from a fiscal hole and transform itself from a pioneering graphics software vendor into a major Internet hardware and software supplier. Corel is seeking a more lucrative role in the corporate software market, with planned releases of Network Computer and Connexus corporate Internet Software at Comdex/Fall this week and its "Alta" Java suite in May. Corel also plans to debut for the corporate crowd a Java data analysis program and an SQL Java-based client to access Web databases, Corel president and chief executive officer Michael Cowpland said during a recent interview at the company's headquarters. Industry observers are concerned this dual approach-gunning for corporate dollars while trying to retain its retail identity-is a major gamble..."
"..has been criticized on many fronts, most notably for its scattered, unfocused product strategy and its recent decision to delay the release of Corel Office for Java.."
"..plans to debut Corel WordPerfect Suite 9 for Windows 98 next summer. The suite will be a "clone" of Microsoft Office, offering the same functionality and ability to switch between the two suites with no extra work-at a much lower price point. It also will include increased Internet integration and voice-recognition technology.."
"..Although revenues will remain approximately the same this year, at about $300 million, Corel forecasts 20 percent growth in 1998..."
".."We've been in transition this year," the executive said. "Now we've narrowed our focus.".."
