"I think he chose to suffer." I realize that does happen, but imo it is rare. To an outsider severe depression is effectively indistinguishable from simple laziness and failure of will. But if you ask me my opinion, that will one day prove to be a barbaric opinion. Barbaric despite (perhaps because) it is such a natural defense mechanism by healthier humans ... what to think about someone apparently uninjured but missing something vital yet not easily definible? "Must be his fault somehow."
